Ave, Drissi, Camus and Desalvo lead final practice sessions
LEXINGTON, Oh. [August 14, 2015] – A record 13 cars elected to re-qualify at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in preparation for their respective Trans Am races this weekend.
As a part of Trans Am’s “Fast Five” qualifying format, drivers who are unsatisfied with their starting positions may choose to re-qualify, discarding their previously earned times to participate in a second qualifying session. Times that drivers earn during the session can improve their positions up to sixth position, as the “Fast Five” from the previous session have locked positions.
In the TA class, several drivers capitalized on the opportunity including Simon Gregg, Kerry Hitt, Trans Am legend Greg Pickett and Joseph Freda. Gregg, in the No. 59 Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette, saw his position increased from ninth position to sixth—the highest possible in the re-qualifying session— thanks to a 1:23.264 lap time.
Five competitors in the TA2 class managed to improve their standings, with Kevin Poitras, in the No. 73 Post Plastics Ford Mustang, leading the way moving from twelfth position to seventh after turning a 1:27.711 lap. Joe Ebben, Keith Prociuk, Scott Ferguson and Jason Kennedy all improved their standings as well. Prociuk, in the No. 9 HP Tuners Chevrolet Camaro, improved from thirtieth position to seventeenth.
In the TA3 class, Russ Snow, Vincent Allegretta and Spencer Caudle also re-qualified. Snow, in the No. 20 Guardian Services, AiM Sports Chevrolet Corvette, made the most of the opportunity with a 1:30.634 lap, moving him up to sixth position on the TA3 starting grid.
Trans Am also held two practice sessions for the TA2 class and then the TA and TA3 classes. In TA2, Tony Ave, Shane Lewis and polesitter Cameron Lawrence made up the top three in practice. The TA class was led by pole-sitter Tomy Drissi, Doug Peterson and John Baucom; while the TA3 class top three consisted of Michael Camus, Russ Snow and Jerry Greene.
The FirstEnergy Muscle Car Challenge, presented by 3-Dimensional Services, a TA2 exclusive 101.96 mile, 45-lap race, will take place at 4:45 p.m. this afternoon, while the Next Dimension 100, presented by FirstEnergy, an identical race featuring TA and TA3 will take place tomorrow, Saturday, August 15 at 12:50 p.m.
