 3Dimensional.com Driver’s Spotlight: Tommy Kendall

Four-time champion to join Miller Racing, return to the seat of the No. 11 in TA2

There are few names in all of motorsports, let alone Trans Am, that carry with them the prestige and prowess in road racing that Tommy Kendall does. It is also as rare to find a driver who means so much to a single Series, or encompasses the spirit of that series, as Tommy Kendall does to Trans Am.

Kendall’s accolades in the Series are numerous, and almost too plentiful to list. Kendall is currently second in all-time Trans Am Championships with four in 1990, 1995, 1996 and 1997, first in all-time fast qualifications with 45, first in top-three finish percentage at 63% and still holds the record for longest race winning streak at 11 from the 1997 season.

Outside of Trans Am, Kendall enjoyed a remarkable IMSA GT career with three GTU titles to his name, along with 14 Winston Cup appearances, a successful stint in ALMS and remains the only American to complete the Bathurst 1000 since 1963. More recently, Kendall has embarked on a successful TV career as a pundit, host and analyst.

Kendall will make his Trans Am return at The 3-Dimensional Services Next Dimension 100, at The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, on Saturday, August 16, just over 27 years after he made his Trans Am debut. Now, 92 starts, 28 wins, 69 top 5 and 79 top 10 appearances later, Kendall will look to add to his legendary record book for the first time since 2004.

Kendall will join his Championship winning talent with a Championship winning TA2 team, Miller Racing, for the remainder of the 2014 season and all of the 2015 season, adding his talent to that of defending TA2 Champion Cameron Lawrence as the team transitions from Chevrolet Camaros to Dodge Challengers.

The combination of Kendall and Lawrence will make for a deadly 1-2 punch; Lawrence currently leads the TA2 point standings in his title defense with 5 wins in 6 races this year.

Kendall will first take to the track at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Friday, August 15, for the first of two practices at Mid-Ohio that day, followed shortly by qualifying at 4:45 p.m. later that afternoon.
