Bow, NH. - September 18, 2019 - Virginia International Raceway plays host to Round 11 of the 2019 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship TA2 Class this weekend, September 20 - 21, with 26 cars entered in the most competitive section of America's leading muscle car series. After a bizarre incident with track debris fouling the LTK Ford Mustang at Watkins Glen and ended his challenge early, Tom Sheehan and the Damon Racing team behind the the No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies car have an early opportunity to put things right and score the finishing position that their pace on the track deserves. After 10 rounds of the season, Tom currently lies in P14 in the Championship table out of 56 Drivers, having garnered 104 points to date.
Those figures however only tell half of the story, and any neutral observer would have to agree that Tom and the No. 97 Damon Racing backed Ford Mustang have had far more than their fair share of freakishly bad luck this year in TA2, something Tom alluded to when he spoke earlier this week, "We're down to the last three TA2 races of a season which, to date, I would rather forget."
With good grace, he accepted that it was up to him and the team to put things right now as the Trans Am roadshow swings into the 'Mother of States.' "The racing gods get another opportunity with The 97. The team is not satisfied. We are in it together. We are all doing our jobs and we're ready to take what that gets us. We've got to put the past aside and take a swing at VIR. We make our own luck from here on out. I've accepted our disappointments and I am grateful for this next chance to perform."
The "Full Course" at VIR is 3.27 miles in length with 17 turns. Originally opened in 1957, it was closed for 26 years from 1974 until the millennium when it was reopened by New Yorkers Harvey Siegel and Connie Nyholm using a "country club" model. Memberships to the track are sold. Each member of the VIR Club receives track time on member days, tickets to all spectator events, and other benefits. VIR's membership model has since been followed by other race tracks across the United States.
The first practice session for the TA2 drivers gets underway on Friday morning at 11:50 a.m. with qualifying at 5:50 p.m. that afternoon. The race itself - powered by AEM Infinity - gets underway Saturday morning at 10:40 a.m. with 100-miles of racing - 31 laps of the circuit.
