Sheehan and LTK Insulation Technologies Team's Promising Race Stymied at Mid-Ohio

Lexington, OHIO – June 28, 2023 – As Tom Sheehan and the No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing Ford Mustang team prepared for Round 7 of the Big Machine Spiked Coolers TA2 Series at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the focus was on sustaining the momentum gained from the Detroit Grand Prix Doubleheader race weekend.

Tallying an impressive 109 points to rank P19 in the championship standings, Tom entered the Mid-Ohio race weekend with confidence and poise, similar to Mechanical Insulation professionals trusting the reliability and durability prevalent with an LTK Pro-Fit Insulation Jacket.

Tom and his hardy team extracted as much performance and speed from the car with each pre-race session, posting the ninth-fastest time in Friday’s test session. Despite posting a P22 fast time in Saturday’s practice session, Tom qualified a respectable P19 on Saturday afternoon, his best starting position to date in 2023.

Once race day arrived, Tom remained calm and composed despite the frantic start. Briefly dropping to P20 in the opening six laps, the New Hampshire racer climbed his way up to P15 by Lap 19.

Hovering between P15 to P17 for the majority of the second half of the race, Tom secured P15 by Lap 39. It appeared as if the Granite State native was in position for a Top 15 finish. Coming fresh on the tail from his P7 Detroit finish, his best performances of the year.

However, with four laps to go, the Ironman racer was turned in the carousel, sustaining some damage in the process as the LTK Mustang was hit from behind. Untimely the car lost power and would not refire. Tom placed P24 in a race won by Rafa Matos.

Through a weather plagued driving weekend at the serpentine road course, Tom showcased Mike Cope racing equipment. Damon Racing fielded the unmistakable yellow No. 97 Ford Mustang in position for a solid Top 15 weekend. Following the race, Tom provided his thoughts to our race reporter.

“We got knocked hard on the right front on the second corner,” Tom recalled. “Guys were wrecking cars, out of control, going for P17 on lap one. We had a wounded car and I just drove it.”

“The car was hurt. We were just hanging on. On the last restart, we were bunched up and somebody drilled and turned me. The car wouldn’t refire and that’s where we finished, on the hook. We’re disappointed but we’ll show them our best (at Road America).”

Similarly, Tom and his team are determined to put Mid-Ohio behind them, preparing for the Road America race weekend from July 7 - 9. Like those looking for a reliable, economic solution to prevent mechanical pipe apparatus from becoming a costly headache for facilities managers, Tom looks forward to taking on the 4.048-mile, 14-turn FIA Grade 2 road course with a competitive showing.

Round 8 of the TA2 season commences with an optional test session on Friday, July 7, followed by a 25-minute practice session and group qualifying sessions on Saturday, July 8. Tom and his competitors vie for maximum points and results with the 3-Dimensional Services Group 100, a race set for 25 laps or 75 minutes on Sunday, July 9.

This year, Trans Am races are available for live streaming on Trans Am and SpeedTour’s YouTube channels, with full playbacks immediately available after the race. Additionally, the races can be seen in edited, 60-minute features broadcasted on MAVTV’s Thursday night primetime slot at 8 p.m. ET.
